Boondocking

First night out and we are boon docking. For those of you who have never RV'd, boondocking is parking in a parking lot, rest area or a Walmart. If you are trying to cover long distances boondocking is convenient and saves a lot of money on campsites.

Boon-docking is convenient because you normally don't have to unhook from your tow (more about the tow later). It is also convenient because you normally are staying very near the road you are traveling on. To stay at a campground frequently you have to travel a distance off the interstate.

Boondocking is also less expensive because you save on the campground fees. Many places like Walmarts and Cracker Barrels are RV friendly and will allow boondocking.

The downsides to boondocking are you need to carry utilities with you or go without and noise. Without a campground there usually is no water, electricity or a place to dump (more in dumping later).

If you choose to boondocking you will need to load up on water for washing and showers. This adds extra weight to your rig. Also if you don't have a generator you will be without electric. More and more RVs have generators.

Kenny has a solution for that. By installing a 12KW generator in the bed of his pickup he can supply not only his rig but also any friends he brings along. He rigged up a plug so that he could extend services to others. The generator uses his auxiliary 100 gal fuel tank to provide the needed diesel fuel.
He runs the generator all night to supply with air conditioning and hair dryers and anything else we may need.

The other downside to boondocking is the noise. If you can run your AC, it can drown out some but it takes a little getting used to trucks running all night next to you in a truck stop. For us we stopped at a pull off along the Turnpike. The noise of trucks and cars whizzing by while you are trying to get some shut-eye is quite distracting.

Among our group we had some that didn't mind and slept well others had their sleep interrupted sleeping right next to the interstate.

All in all we are looking forward to being at a campground tonight.
