Virginia City/Nevada City

Old West town remains in tact from the gold rush era. It is like stepping back in time to see all the old antiques, livery stables, saloons and the like.

In December of 1863, George Ives brutally murdered a man for the gold he carried and left his frozen corpse in the snow. A miners court was formed with the doctor of the town pressing as judge and 24 miners served as jury.at that time there was no legal jurisdiction that governed the area so the miners formed their own law. The trial led to the formation of the vigilantes that presided over the trials and hangings of over 24 more in less than a month.

Nevada City is also home to the largest automatic music machine collection in the world.
